The split screen between "what actually happened" and "what could have been" is used to strong narrative effect, here. It highlights the cruelty of what happened to the main character by contrasting it with the happy family life she wonders if she could have had. (Or at least, I interpret the right side of the screen as representing the main character's wondering at what she could have had if her mother continued to raise her, more than an objective reality.)

The art style is a great example of a very particular strain in Japanese cartooning/character design that I often see described by anglosphere commentators as being evocative of western animation, but that honestly feels more directly tied to older anime and manga (Tezuka and contemporaries). Which, yes, Tezuka was taking inspiration from American cartooning of the sort epitomized by Disney Studios, but...

Like, Professor Layton and the Curious Village feels extremely influenced by The Triplets of Belville in its character designs, but later games in the franchise - the 3DS era games, in particular - feel more like this latter category that I'm talking about. Kaiba is also in this category.

Also I like the song itself. I'm very thankful that it's subtitled; if you're like me and don't know Japanese, be sure to turn them on.

The blending of the what-ifs with the physical space of the scenes is a really cool effect
